Skilsaw SOUTHPAW Blade Left 7-1/4″ Circular Saw, SPT67M8-01

When you ask which blade side of a circular saw a user likes the answer is almost always a regional one.  If you are a West Coast guy then you likely are a “blade left” person.  But if you happen to be an East Coast guy then you will almost always prefer a “blade right” saw.  We could get into the reasons why there is this split.  And also there are people (like myself) who break this mold so it’s not a hard and fast rule.

Who is This Saw Made For?

I’ve always been located on the West Coast so I’m surrounded by blade left guys, primarily rear handle hypoid and worm drive users.  These types of saws dominate the West Coast and all feature a blade on the left.  When a West Coast guy Picks up a “sidewinder” style saw which almost always has a blade on the right they usually have one initial complaint.  “I can’t see what I’m cutting.”  Of course this is for right handed people which make up 90% of the population.  All the lefties (I’m talking handed and not political leanings) I’ve been around like a standard blade right sidewinder so they have tons of choices for a saw.

Enough About the Blade Side, What About the Saw?

This new Skilsaw SOUTHPAW is packed with a powerful 15 Amp motor turning at 5300 RPM.  Yes it should be an wood eating machine.  And to round out the powerful motor is robust lightweight construction.  Using full magnesium construction Skilsaw managed to get the new Southpaw down to only 8.95lbs.  Impressive!  Some other notable features are a 56 degree bevel capacity with stops at 0 and 45.  Depth of cut is 2-7/16″ at 90 degrees and 1-7/8″ at a 45 degree bevel.  One last feature which I find beneficial is the 10′ power cord.  If you’ve ever been cutting sheet goods and had the plug of your 8′ cord catch on the board edge you will be thankful for the generous 10′ cord length.
